Stock-tank pools
A stock-tank pool is a round galvanized-steel livestock tank turned into a small soaking pool. What to expect on a ranch, desert or rustic stay.
What a stock-tank pool is
Stock tanks are the round, galvanized-steel troughs used on ranches to water livestock. Fitted with a pump and filter, they make a simple, rustic soaking pool. You’ll find them at desert, ranch and farmhouse rentals, including some we’ve researched in the Texas Hill Country. They are typically a couple of feet deep and only a few people wide: good for sitting, cooling off and watching the sky, not for swimming.
On PoolCabinFinder, a stock-tank pool is always labelled as a stock-tank pool, never as a swimming pool.
What they’re good for
- Cooling off on hot days. In desert and Hill Country summers, a shaded tank of cool water is a real pleasure.
- Atmosphere. Under string lights or a big night sky, they are a memorable part of a stay.
- Low-key groups. Couples and small groups who want to relax rather than swim.
What to check
- Sun and shade. A tank in full summer sun can get very warm. Ask whether it’s shaded.
- Heating. Most stock tanks aren’t heated. A few have heaters or are paired with a hot tub.
- Cleaning and filtration. Ask how often the water is changed or filtered, and whether it’s cleaned between guests.
- Season. Some are emptied or covered in colder months.
- Safety. Even shallow water needs supervision with young children.
Stock tank or plunge pool?
Both are small. A plunge pool is usually a built pool, often heated, sometimes combined with a spa. A stock-tank pool is a free-standing metal tank, usually unheated and simpler to look after. Our pool-types guide compares them with full swimming pools.
