Why Blue Ridge works for a pool stay

Blue Ridge is a small mountain town in north Georgia’s Fannin County, about 90 miles north of Atlanta. It’s surrounded by the Chattahoochee National Forest, a TVA lake and some of the state’s best trout water. Cabins here are often wooded, with mountain or lake views. Private pools are rarer than hot tubs, so the ones that exist are worth knowing about. Among those we’ve researched are outdoor in-ground pools open through the summer, and heated indoor pools in larger cabins nearer Ellijay.

Pool season in the north Georgia mountains

The Fannin County Chamber’s published averages put July at about 88°F by day and 64°F at night, and August about the same. By October that drops to about 72°F by day and 43°F at night, and winter nights fall well below freezing. Practically:

  • Late May to early September: outdoor pool season. One Blue Ridge pool we’ve researched opens Memorial Day and closes Labor Day; others are simply “seasonal”, so check the dates.
  • Spring and fall: expect cool nights. Look for a heated pool, and confirm whether heating carries a fee. The fees we’ve seen in the area are charged per day or per night.
  • Winter: only an indoor pool makes sense.

Where to base yourself

  • Blue Ridge: the historic downtown and depot, restaurants, and the scenic railway.
  • Mineral Bluff and Morganton: quieter areas near Lake Blue Ridge and the Toccoa River. Many pool cabins list one of these as their address.
  • Ellijay (Gilmer County, to the south): Explore Georgia calls it the state’s Apple Capital; the Georgia Apple Festival is held each October.

Between swims

  • Lake Blue Ridge: a TVA reservoir stretching 11 miles from the dam. TVA notes the level varies about 22 feet between summer and winter in a normal year, which matters if your cabin advertises a dock. Morganton Point Recreation Area, the lake’s only developed shoreline campground, has a designated swimming area.
  • Toccoa River: unusually for Georgia, it flows north. Below the Blue Ridge dam it’s a well-known trout stream (Georgia DNR stocks rainbow and brown trout), and the Benton MacKaye Trail crosses it on a 260-foot suspension bridge.
  • Aska Trail System: about 17 miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails, less than 10 miles from downtown.
  • Blue Ridge Scenic Railway: a 26-mile round trip along the Toccoa to McCaysville, running March through December, with fall-foliage trips in autumn.

Know before you go

  • Fishing licences: in Georgia, anglers 16 and older need both a fishing licence and a trout licence.
  • Electric vehicles: the Chamber notes there are limited charging stations in the area. Ask your cabin whether it has a charger.
  • Mountain roads: many cabins are reached by steep or gravel drives. Ask the manager if you’re arriving after dark or in winter.

Getting there

The Chamber’s route is I-75 North to I-575, then the Georgia Mountain Parkway (Hwy 515) to Blue Ridge, about 90 miles from Atlanta.

Pool questions to ask a Blue Ridge cabin

  1. Is the pool private to our group? Some listings in the area use “pool” for a shared amenity.
  2. What are this year’s open dates, and is it heated (included, or a daily fee)?
  3. Is the pool fenced or gated, if you’re bringing young children?
