Heated, Indoor or Outdoor: Choosing a Pool for the Season

The right pool depends less on the cabin than on the calendar. A guide to matching pool type to your travel dates.

A pool that looks perfect in a summer photo can be closed, covered or simply too cold on the dates you want. Before falling for a listing, decide which kind of pool your trip actually needs.

Outdoor pools

An unheated outdoor pool is at its best in the warmest part of the year. In mountain destinations, where nights stay cool even in summer, water temperature can lag behind the air. Many owners open outdoor pools for a set season, so check the dates rather than assuming a pool is available year-round.

Heated outdoor pools

Heating stretches the season into spring and fall. The terms vary widely: some cabins heat the pool year-round at no extra cost, others heat it only in certain months, and many charge a daily fee or need notice in advance. Ask what temperature the heater can realistically reach in the month you are visiting, especially at elevation.

Indoor and covered pools

An indoor or fully enclosed pool is the reliable choice for winter trips, rainy seasons and anywhere with cold nights. These are less common and tend to sit in larger cabins and lodges, which makes them popular for group trips and holidays. Check whether the pool room is heated as well as the water.

A quick way to decide

  • Summer, warm destination: any private pool will do; shade and deck space matter more.
  • Spring or fall: filter for heated pools and confirm the heating terms in writing.
  • Winter or uncertain weather: look for an indoor or covered pool, and add a hot tub if you can.
